hagiography

when it’s not in fashion
nancy is an old fashioned name
almost entirely used for
babies identified as girls
it would be just a nancy’s luck
if she weren’t, the name derives from

agnes from the greek word
hagnos meaning pure or chaste
not hag
in mediaeval times in england
she might be referred to as
mine ancy, get it?

i’ve aways identified as a boy
it still works when i’m 77
so no complaints
i’m no nancy
but i love the name
and every nancy i’ve ever known

has been the same
mild mannered
and in every other way exciting
then again
i’m easily
excited

which is much better than the way
the pope does it
make saints i mean
just a few exaggerated reports
and a constituency to support
and any nancy could become a saint

if you haven’t looked it up already
st agnes of rome was a virgin martyr
beautiful, rich, but uninclined to marry any suitor,
she was stripped, dragged to a brothel
and every guy who tried to have her was
struck blind

so her virginity
was miraculously
preserved

she was only thirteen
when she was burnt
at the stake
for doing nothing much at all
except
refusing
