the argument of this book

I sing of Times trans-shifting
– Robert Herrick, Hesperides, 1648

I

intuit
organochlorines
in blood lipids liver brain breast
milk
a diseased future
immunosuppressed
measured half lives
Inuit

rise, Corinna, you lie too long in bed
did you see sails in fjords
when you turned your head? what perfidy
Corinna!

separated by degrees virgins
were inviolate
in paradise this morning

when the wind blew bleak
the icebird picked
their eyes
your dissolving children

II

Corinna, why thump this
blind piano
of badly broadened subjects
on my castellated shore

after after dinner speeches when the wool
is pulled

why breach my subtle eyrie
viewing writhing viewers
when you could be counting susurrations
in packaged
packaging

or tripping over Sundays from lawn
to shining lawn
